What is Bridge and how do you get started?

Bridge is a trick-taking card game played with a standard 52-card deck. It is considered as one of the most intellectually stimulating card games. It is not based on luck alone but rather on skill, strategy, and teamwork. In many ways it is more complex than even chess. You can play basic bridge after a few weeks of training but mastering the game can take a lifetime! American Contract Bridge League (ACBL) is the main organisation for promoting competitive bridge, and our club is affiliated with the ACBL.

To get started with bridge, consider the following steps:

  • Learn the Basics: Familiarize yourself with the rules of bridge, including the card rankings, bidding process, and gameplay. There are many online resources, tutorials, and books available for beginners.
  • Take online lessons: There are a number of online platforms and courses that offer lessons for beginners and advanced players alike.
  • Take Lessons: Many clubs offer lessons for beginners. Consider enrolling in a beginner's course to learn the fundamentals and improve your skills. While we do not offer formal face to face lessons at Riverside Bridge Club, we would like you to express your interest by filling out our contact form so that we can contact you when lessons become available. If you can put together a group of 4 or more we will do our best to arrange lessons for the group.
  • Practice Regularly: The more you play, the better you'll become. Participate in club games, online bridge platforms, or practice with friends to hone your skills.
  • Stay Patient and Have Fun: Bridge is a complex game that takes time to master. Enjoy the learning process and the social interactions that come with playing.
